September 11, 1864, William S. Gentry (my 3rd Great Grandfather) and two of his sons, John N. and Stephen M., were taken prisoner by rebel soldiers, at their farm on the Hanging Dog Creek. They were tied to a tree and shot to death. These tragic deaths left Christopher, who had just returned from the war; William Alexander, who was twelve years old; their younger sister Phoebe Caroline, and mother Nancy, to run the family farm. Hanging Dog is on Hiawassee Lake in the Nantahala National Forest, five miles northwest of Murphy,Cherokee County, North Carolina. The area takes its name from Hanging Dog Creek, scene of the last battle of the Civil War in N.C.
